Should I train Online? The importance of Residential courses

Online versus Residential. Or Online and Residential!

The importance of “hands on” and  “live-in” experience.

The Covid Pandemic happened! Five years later we are still living and reflecting on the consequences. In June 2000, Bodhiyoga signed up to Zoom and ran its first Online retreat. It was amazing, in that we drew together a group of students old and new across three time zones. North America, Europe, New Zealand. Bodhiyoga Online gave birth!

Going Online!

We were reluctant to go Online. Call us anti-technologists! Call us old fashioned! But there is something about a bodywork training that needs physical presence, it needs hands-on contact. Seeing, feeling and breathing together in the same space. Makes a big difference. It’s a lived thing and a very human thing! We are of dust and blood made!

Going Hybrid! Our 3 Step Training!

We had to postpone our usual Residencial training in 2020. Our group for 2021 asked for continued contact post -Residential training with us so “Bodhiyoga Weekly” emerged, January 2022. We all came together from around the world and the Internet gives a virtual link.

I got really excited about this, as it means we can offer our teaching regularly and we can reach out any where in the world. We have built up a library of classes free to all.

Step One of the BYTT becomes joining our weekly classes. We explore over a one year cycle all our 11 groups of yoga poses, going from simple grounding “Group Zero” poses, standing poses, to meditation and relaxation techniques.  Step Two offered exclusively to our teacher trainees is an intensive Online foundation and preparation for Step Three, the Residential component!

Our Residential Course in Spain

Since its conception BYTT was based on a residential, live-in, live-together context. During the training we form a temporary community and effectively do a retreat together in Suryavana Retreat Centre in the countryside, about one hour up in the hills from Valencia.  These ideal conditions support meditation and yoga practice. The  Residential gives an excellent opportunity to get to know your colleagues and work more “hands-on” with your yoga practice. 50% of the Residential training involves “posture labs” where we examine postures in detail and do teaching practice where you get to teach yoga and make the first steps to become a yoga teacher.
